An RV that spends most of the summer parked could be meeting that demand instead. Some of the best camping in northern Illinois is just outside Rockford. In Loves Park, Rock Cut State Park covers about 3,254 acres and holds two lakes, the 162 acre Pierce Lake and the 50 acre Olson Lake, along with roughly 270 campsites and a trail network of about 40 miles for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. It is open year round, so renters use it for summer fishing trips and winter ice fishing alike. Closer to downtown, Anderson Japanese Gardens offers quiet ponds, stone paths, and water features, and the Rock River runs through the middle of the city with riverside paths and parks. From here, Wisconsin is only a short drive north on I-90 or U.S. 51.
With consignment, owners in Rockford make money from their RV's empty weeks and skip running the rentals personally. The Fleet Manager sets rates, maintains the calendar and listing, responds to renters, hands over the keys, receives the RV back, has it cleaned and inspected, and books any maintenance. Rockford's spot on I-90 between Chicago and Wisconsin brings renters from the northern Illinois suburbs, Madison and Milwaukee, many headed to the Wisconsin Dells, Lake Geneva or the Northwoods. Closer to home, Rock Cut State Park's lakes and trails, Anderson Japanese Gardens and the Rock River paths draw campers too. Renters book family outings, lake getaways, summer fair trips and longer northbound vacations. The main gains are fresh income, knowledgeable rental support, routine inspections, hardly any time on renters, and your own dates kept whenever you want them. That puts the RV to work through the summer instead of leaving it parked for months at a time.
Yes. Whether it is kept near the Rock River or out by Loves Park, an RV is ready to rent once its title is clean, its Illinois registration is current, and it carries insurance meant for rentals. Protection on each trip is provided through an approved rental platform or commercial rental policy, given that a personal policy generally won't extend to paying renters. Report the income at tax time, and review HOA covenants, City of Rockford or Winnebago County parking limits and your storage lot's policy on pickups. Our team helps local owners line it all up, and RV Management 101 covers the details.
Around Rockford, earnings follow the RV's type and age, its condition and location, the season, the dates you keep open and regional demand. Summer lake weekends and family trips north to Wisconsin earn the most, and holiday weekends left open make a real difference. As a general estimate, busy rental months typically bring owners about $500 to $1,100. Motorhomes book most often, as do late model units, bunk models and RVs parked close to I-90. Our RV rental income calculator gives a quick estimate for your own RV.
Class C motorhomes and travel trailers with bunks bring owners around Rockford the best returns, whether renters are camping at Rock Cut State Park or heading north. Camper vans appeal to couples, and Class A motorhomes to bigger groups and longer stays. Many rentals head a few hundred miles north to the Wisconsin Dells or Door County, so rigs that are comfortable on long drives win out. Renters also come from Chicago, Naperville, and Milwaukee.
A monthly budget of about $80 to $180 covers RV storage for most Rockford owners ($2.75 to $6 per foot per month). Length drives much of the difference, along with RV type and amenities like access hours and security, and covered or indoor storage costs more than open parking. Rockford, Loves Park and Machesney Park all have indoor and outdoor choices, and indoor space keeps snow loads off the roof during northern Illinois winters.
Our territory managers work with professional on-site maintenance teams to make sure your RV is meticulously maintained throughout the year. Your RV will benefit form ongoing attention and basic maintenance like tire checks before and after each rental, roof and slide out checks once a month, ongoing appliance testing, routine oil changes, and more. We want your RV in top shape all the time so that it can continue to perform well and generate revenue. As an RV owner in our program, there are 3 main types of maintenance costs to consider:
1) Routine maintenance: Oil changes, tire rotations, etc. Owners are billed periodically for these expenses at discounted rates, and the deduction can often come directly from the rental profits in a given month.
2) Rental Damages: Any damage to an RV that happens on a rental will be covered fully by the renter's security deposit and/or the commercial insurance coverage. Our managers deal with all claims and repairs at no cost to the RV owner - renters pay the deductible and your personal insurance is not involved.
3) Systemic maintenance: Systemic issues are the responsibility of the RV owner. A/C failure, water pump failure, fridge or hot water tank failure, etc. These are costs that arise from no fault of the renter. Warranty protection plans usually cover these systemic repairs, and our managers work with the warranty company and RV techs to get these fixed. Our managers will work with you to get your RV back in top shape as quickly and professionally as possible.
Rockford's main rental window stretches from Memorial Day to late September, with July often the peak, though weather and big events can change the picture. EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in Wisconsin draws aviation fans each late July, and the Winnebago County Fair returns to Pecatonica each August. Fall color trips keep some bookings going into October.
Each approved RV in the Rockford area gets a Fleet Manager through RV Management USA. That manager rents it out, keeps the listing current, cleans it and handles upkeep, walking renters through the rig at pickup and checking it in at return. Renters from the Chicago suburbs, Madison and Milwaukee use I-90 to reach Wisconsin, which brings plenty of them past local owners. Our Illinois page explains the program statewide, and owners farther south can see Peoria.
